Letter from our President to our Volunteers, Fosters and Friends

We are an all volunteer-run organization and can’t do this alone. We have a huge network of amazing foster homes that help us save the most vulnerable animals! #fosteringsaveslives #KITSAPGREATGIVE #adoptdontshop #whyKARE

Read below, then donate:

Good afternoon folks,

A couple of weeks ago, I asked for your assistance in getting the word out about the need for more fosters in order to help Vanessa make space for dogs she needed to rescue from a hoarding situation. And, as usual, you stepped up to the plate.  Thanks to your efforts, we were able to bring in eight dogs that helped Vanessa make room for the dogs in the hoarding situation.

Vanessa was able to find rescues to take all the dogs (over 18) within a couple of days. And, a good thing too because the day she rescued some of them, one gave birth to several puppies.

Let me give you a little background about Vanessa: she is the person responsible for rescuing at least 90% of the dogs we receive. Over the last three years, we have received over 250 dogs and that is amazing! You can’t imagine the stories she tells me about the situations these dogs come from. I am always amazed that she still has the strength to keep going.

I wanted to share her words below. I received a message from Vanessa the day after she called me in tears, having just left the hoarding situation. I had contacted her that day to just check in and see how she was doing. Here is her response:

“Well, I was ok then not!  My pregnant momma decided to give birth like right now. But I did come home to a package from you and again I’m overwhelmed with emotion.

‘I was really ready to throw in the towel but then I look at all the collars, some with name tags still on and I took a trip down memory lane. We saved that many!!! I’m proud and ever so thankful to have you as a rescue partner, I could not have saved any of these without you. I am beyond blessed to call you my friend!!! Thank you for all you do. Don’t call me, too busy crying.”

Just before Vanessa discovered the hoarding situation, she had rescued an elder dog that was going blind and deaf, and the owners didn’t want him back from the shelter. The package she is referring to is a box of collars that had come off the dogs she had sent us the past several months, that I was sending back for her to re-use.

This is a message I had to share with you all.

YOU are the reason we are able to rescue so many. I am only the conduit. Without all of you supporting KARE, helping with events, fostering, supporting us in many ways, we would not be able to continue to help these animals. So please, take a moment, pat yourself on the back, give a loved one a hug and know that I would love to give each and every one of you a hug myself.

Thank you from the bottom to the top of my heart.

Dear Fellow Animal Lover,

With every class we teach at Kitsap Animal Rescue & Education (KARE), we stress to our students the importance of trying to look at the world from the dog’s perspective. This is what I am asking of you now.

Ethel and Lucy were abandoned on the front porch of their home when the owner moved, left to fend for themselves in sub-zero weather. They had no fresh water, no food, and no shelter other than hiding under the porch. We believe they were used as breeding dogs for a backyard puppy mill, both having endured multiple litters. The lack of care was evident in their completely filthy, tangled coats, underweight bodies and badly neglected teeth.

As a bonded pair, after six weeks in foster care, Ethel and Lucy are now in their new home, loved and back to good health. They are thriving with their forever family, and, for the first time in their young lives, secure. Imagine how grateful they must be for the love and attention KARE has provided.

Over the past three years, KARE, an all-volunteer nonprofit, has rescued, rehabilitated and found new forever homes for over 400 dogs like Ethel and Lucy.
Our achievements are made possible thanks to generous donations from people like you.

On Tuesday, May 2, KARE is participating in the Kitsap Great Give and we are asking for your continued support. The Great Give is a 24-hour national day of giving. In addition to your donation made on that day, there is a pool of community funds distributed to all participating nonprofits which, in the past, has boosted your donation by approximately 10%. Last year, KARE received three of the additional prizes awarded amounting to $1,500.

KARE is participating in the Kitsap Great Give again this year. Learn more here

The Kitsap Great Give is wonderful because it is online. As long as you can access the internet, you can participate! On May 2, just visit and search “KARE” to start giving, so we can continue our life-saving efforts.

Thank you,

Anchor[As of 1 pm] From the Kitsap Community Foundation:

Please accept my deepest apologies for the Great Give website malfunctioning. Unbelievably, [Kimbia’s] system started failing 5 – 6 hours ago, and they have not been able to fix it yet. I know you must be frustrated. Believe me, so am I. Mainly, I deeply saddened at the impact this is having on our day of giving.

Kimbia, the company contracted to manage the donation website, tells me that their system is starting to function better. It does appear to be functioning a bit more reliably, but is far from functioning as it should. They do not have a clear ETA on when the system will start functioning perfectly again.

We are extending the deadline for donations made during the Great Give to 9 p.m. on May 4th. So, rather than “turning off” the Great Give website at midnight tonight, we will keep it open for donations until 9 p.m. tomorrow (May 4th).

This evening, at the Kitsap Great Give Party at Clearwater Casino Resort, your support helped us win one of the BIG PRIZES! With your donations, we won the Clearwater 2nd Prize of $500!
AnchorLeaderboards may be down… but we think we can still have some fun with prizes!

Last year we raised $19,454.68. KARE led the Small Nonprofit Organizations with the most funds raised for a total of $18,031, which didn’t include additional funds from the matching pool of funds! These funds gave us a big start towards having our own rehabilitation facility. As if a malfunctioning site isn’t challenging enough, the Kitsap Great Give has additional event challenges and prizes for the day! We’ve already completed one challenge today, and, with your help, we think we can win these particular prizes:

Early Bird Prize – $1,000

(Sponsored by Kitsap Community Foundation Board of Directors). For the nonprofit that raises the most money by 9:00 a.m.

Most Donors Prize for Small Nonprofits

1st place $1,000, 2nd place $500, 3rd place $250.
The nonprofit with an annual budget under $100,000 that has the most individual donors by the end of the day wins $1,000.

  • Second prize is $500.
  • Third is $250.

We Can Do One Better

This year, KARE has found a donor who has challenged us to do better than last year. If we beat our record of $18,031, they will match every dollar over the $18K. For example, if we raise $20K this year, they will match an additional $2000! So… can we do it?

“24 Hours of Online Giving?”- CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!

How will the Kitsap Great Give funding help our organization?

The Kitsap Great Give funding will allow KARE to extend our community outreach and free workshops, rescue more pets from high kill areas, and aid in procuring and developing a training facility. Donate during the Kitsap Great Give and support Kitsap Animal Rescue & Education (KARE) and many other local organizations! We’re thrilled to announce Kitsap Great Give, a national day of local giving that will be held here in Silverdale on May 3, 2016. A partnership between Kitsap Community Foundation and local nonprofits, donors from every neighborhood in our community will come together to raise significant funds for local needs—all on a single day. This is a big, bold opportunity for our community. We’re joining more than 100 communities across the country to raise millions of dollars for the greater good. And every gift given to local nonprofits will be increased by a national pool of matching funds. We’re partnering with area nonprofits, businesses and community members to raise funds for local needs. Our giving website makes it easy, safe and fun to give to organizations already doing essential work in our community. Here are three simple ways you can help:

  • Pledge to give
  • Spread the word
  • Make a gift on May 3

Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram!

How It Works

  • On May 3, anyone can go to the website, hosted by Kitsap Community Foundation, and donate to as many participating nonprofits as they want, as many times as they want.
  • All donations made during the Kitsap Great Give will be enhanced by a local and, we hope, national bonus pool.
  • The local bonus bucks pool will be composed of sponsorship dollars donated by the event’s Presenting Partner — the United Way of Kitsap County, corporate sponsors, and individual sponsors. During the event, real-time donation totals will be shown on the event website for each nonprofit. Prizes will be awarded to nonprofits throughout the day (e.g., $1,000 awarded to the nonprofit that receives the most donation transactions). The final amount of the bonus bucks pool and the proportion of funds a nonprofit will receive will not be determined until May 19.
  • All donations made on May 3 are tax-deductible in their full amount (prior to any fees).
  • An email tax receipt will be sent to the donor generally within a few minutes of donating on the website, but please note it could take up to an hour depending on the volume of donations. you do not need to send a tax receipt, but you do need to thank and acknowledge your donors!Donors should remember to notify their credit card issuer if they plan to make a large donation, as they may hold the transaction as per the fraud protection services.
  • A link to access your donor information will be emailed to you at the end of April. This link will download a spreadsheet in real time during the event and after the event. Donor information will include all fields on the donation form, except credit card information. Please save your link as the organizers will not be able to send to you during May 3. your link will remain active until August 31st, 2016, at which time it will deactivate.
  • Credit card transactions on are secured with PCI Level 1 secure service provider certification. This means you can rest assured that donor information will have the highest security possible.
  • The transaction fee for the Kitsap Great Give is comprised of 2.9% for payment vendor Kimbia and 2% credit card processing fee. These transaction fees are for these vendors only and no other fees are taken or received by the organizers.
  • Participating organizations will receive a check that will include all donations (less fees), plus any incentive dollars received no later than June 20th, 2016.
  • Kitsap Community Foundation will organize media sponsors to provide county-wide marketing of the event. However, the donations and matching pool funds that a specific nonprofit receives during Kitsap Great Give will depend largely on how well that nonprofit reaches out to its supporters.

Fosters Needed TODAY!

KARE (and these puppies) Needs Your Help!

These pups were taken from a hoarding situation in Missouri.  This litter of puppies (and there are four more litters) were rescued because they were in the worst shape.  The pups were covered in fleas and so dehydrated she couldn’t even get enough skin pulled to give them their shots!

Our contact in Missouri will keep the puppies for about two weeks to get them healthy enough to travel, and then, with your help, KARE will be able to bring them here and help them find their forever homes. Until then, we need Fosters.

Please consider becoming a KARE Foster and apply TODAY.

Andrea Sullivan, Kitsap Animal Rescue & Education – Marketing Coordinator

We’ve been posting a lot lately about the Kitsap Great Give, encouraging our friends and followers to donate, not just to Kitsap Animal Rescue & Education (KARE), but to any local non-profit they support, and I wanted to share a little bit about why I am giving to the Kitsap Great Give, and specifically to KARE.

Chewie aka MielOur organization serves all of Kitsap County, and although we are based out of and primarily serve Kitsap County, our educational and training services can extend well into Western Washington. We have, over the past 10 years, rescued and re-homed over 350+ pets (typically 1 animal per household, as of November 2015).

Personally, I find it interesting that we rescue animals, find them homes, and provide education services and resources to help animals stay in the homes that they have, and yet our organization is without a physical location, a home to call our own. As an all-volunteer-run, non-profit organization, our success is determined by the dedication and support of our volunteers and foster families, and the support of our community.

KARE Training Sign TonkerOur future plans are to procure and develop a facility to host educational workshops/seminars. Currently, we rent facilities or partner with other local organizations to host our classes. Additionally, we would love to have our own, private “doggy playground”, where dogs can learn to socialize appropriately, outside of the typical classroom setting, and their humans can receive some informal behavioral/training consultations while their dogs play.

We fundraise to support our rescue/foster program, to pay rent/fees associated with teaching classes, and then whatever is left over goes towards this future facility.

We continue to grow, which is very exciting and wonderful, but often times there is high-demand without the resources to support it. I, like most of our volunteers and fosters, have a full-time job outside of KARE.

My day typically consists of: working at my full-time job as an in-house graphic designer for a large organization, coming home to spend some time with my family, and then I may spend another 2-4 hours each day to coordinate marketing efforts and provide graphic design services for KARE. My thoughts being, I don’t have much to give in terms of money, but I can give [this].

We do what we do because pets are our passion.

I do what I do because I believe KARE is an organization that deserves my time and support, and I hope you agree.

I hope you choose to give.

We are always looking for Fosters to help us with your rescues. If you didn’t know already, KARE is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization, which means we don’t have a singular facility to house those we rescue, and rely on our wonderful and amazing Foster families and volunteers to ensure the animals rescued are provided the utmost care and socialization to prepare them for their forever homes.
