Interested in Becoming a KARE Volunteer?

We provide the training for all volunteer positions, so no prior experience is required. Whether fostering incoming animals, assisting in classes or workshops, or helping to make an event successful, you can be a part of the life-saving work we do. Before applying, please consider the following:

  1. Be of age. Most volunteer positions have a minimum age requirement of 18. Under 18? You will need permission from your Parent or Guardian. Contact our Volunteer Coordinator for details.
  2. Be in the area. Although KARE does not have a physical location at this time, we are centrally located out of Silverdale, WA and operate within Kitsap County. Volunteers (and Fosters) must have reliable transportation and should consider the potential commute before applying to volunteer. Please contact our Volunteer Coordinator for details.
  3. Submit an application. Please contact our Volunteer Coordinator for an application form and tell us a bit about yourself.
  4. Attend an informal orientation. You will learn about the volunteer positions available with KARE, our history and policies.
  5. Choose a position and shift. Peruse the volunteer position descriptions to see what kinds of positions KARE has available.
  6. Things to consider. There are some flexible options, but a three- to six-month commitment is expected for most volunteer positions. While people come to KARE because they love animals, KARE Volunteers must also be able to work well with other people. After all, better relationships with our pets starts with the people.

Volunteer Position Descriptions

Administrative Assistant

This position is responsible for a variety of support functions at KARE and will work closely with the Events Coordinator, Marketing Coordinator, Adoptions/Foster Coordinator, Board Members, and, report to the Founder/President. Among other things, it requires careful attention to detail and the ability to reliably meet deadlines. Flexibility is required in responding to emergent needs, some of which may not be delineated below but which are consistent with them. Communication skills is a must.The primary areas of responsibility are: Serve as KARE liaison to all aspects of the organization to ensure a productive relationship. Maintain proper files, ensure all business correspondences are handled appropriately. Assist with gathering of data and photos needed for newsletters and other KARE publications. Assist with social media as requested. Maintain databases and other files in neat and orderly condition. Assist President in gathering and disseminating information for the Board. As assigned, place orders for purchase of supplies. Maintain SOPs, Policies and Procedures information for distribution as appropriate. Receive maintenance and other requests for assistance from staff and route them to the relevant person. Assist as needed with the volunteer, adoption, foster, and training programs.

This is a full time job.


Events Coordinator

The purpose of this position is to successfully plan, implement and coordinate fundraising events and other special events. The Events Manager works closely with the Marketing Coordinators, Board Members, Volunteer Coordinators and volunteers. This is a key position on the community relations team and is responsible for advancing the overall fundraising program.


Community Outreach Volunteer

Big heart for animals but short on time? KARE needs friendly, outgoing, animal-loving people to represent KARE at fairs, festivals and parades throughout the year around the Puget Sound. Community Outreach Volunteers answer questions about the work we do at KARE, hand out educational materials, and tell people about our programs and upcoming events. This position is a great alternative (or addition) to a weekly volunteer commitment. If you are a student, you’ll get great public speaking experience while supporting animals!

Dates Available: Summer and fall with a few events in spring and winter

Shifts: Two to five-hour shifts (you choose events to attend based on a current event schedule) usually on Saturday or Sunday with some weekday opportunities.

Time commitment: Flexible.

Location: Around Puget Sound, WA

Training required: Community Outreach Volunteers are required to attend a volunteer orientation/meeting with Events Coordinator and/or Marketing Coordinator for a two-hour skills training, which includes discussion on KARE key messages and programs, tips on talking to the public, and how to set up an outreach booth.


Event Volunteer

During KARE Special Events, such as the Wine & Wag Gala, or outreach events, KARE may call on Event Volunteers for the following positions:

Set-up
Assist staff with setting up event. Run through check-list to ensure all set-up tasks are complete. Physical position that involves heavy lifting and ability to work quickly.

Sponsor Check-in
Direct sponsors, vendors and entertainment to their designated booths. Helping them get set-up and carrying stuff from their cars if necessary.

Retail Booth
Sell KARE merchandise to participants, collect KARE donations, setup and tear down displays.

Event Registration
Register and check-in participants. Strong attention to detail and people skills needed. Please be on time to allow time for training beforehand, and follow up at the end of  an event.

Floater
You name it, it will probably need to be done! Flexibility and patience are a must.

Registration Line Greeter and Dog Handler
Position yourself near the lines forming at check-in. Welcome guests, answer check-in questions, direct people.

Event Photographer
Capture the moment! Photographers must have own equipment and will work with Marketing Team.

Event Patrol
Travel the event and clean up as you go. Empty trash cans and recycle bins as needed. Report to Event Food & Beverage Coordinator if applicable.

Clean-up Crew
Once the event is over, break down everything, load trucks, clean up garbage, empty garbage and recycle bins and take down signage, etc.

Training: All positions listed above will receive any necessary training on the day of the event.


Marketing, Web and Graphics Team

Marketing Team members will report to Marketing Coordinator. Volunteers must have good writing skills, computer skills and have a working knowledge of digital photography, graphic design, basic html skills, and/or marketing trends. Duties may include: posting photos and descriptions of animals for adoption on the KARE website according to KARE policies and procedures; uploading information from home to KARE website and social media sites; producing video or print/digital graphics for marketing/promotional purposes; and maintaining KARE website and social media sites.

Marketing Team members assist by working with the public at outreach events, attending KARE classes or events for video or photography, and various other projects.

This position has some animal contact.

There are a variety of opportunities available for individuals who wish to gain valuable hands-on experience in the fields of companion animal sheltering, public affairs/community relations, rehabilitation and veterinary medicine.


Behavior and Training Team

KARE Animal Behaviorists, Dog Trainers, and Training Assistants will report to Training Coordinator(s) and facilitate life-long placements and lower relinquishments of pets through education and training of general public and KARE volunteers. Their goals are to enhance the life of animals, primary dogs, through training, behavior modification and enrichment activities.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Use positive reinforcement training methods is a must.
  • May include participation in evaluation of animals, preparation of individual written training plans, and hands-on work with animals in the program.
  • Lead group training classes for the public offered through KARE.
  • Maintain on-going behavior treatment programs for dogs in KARE Foster Care.
  • Work with the Training Coordinator(s) on meeting the behavioral needs of the animals in KARE Foster Care.
  • May set up and perform temperament and obedience testing of animals to be used in the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) testing.
  • Provide on-site counseling for potential adopters to help make successful placements.
  • Perform office work including: filing, organizing, maintaining supplies, copying, scheduling and database entry.
  • Maintain a high level of communication and work collaboratively with all personnel in a manner that is consistent with KARE Policy and Procedures.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned.

Job Related & Essential Qualifications

Ability to:

  • Handle the physical and emotional aspects of work in an animal rescue and education environment.
  • Work well and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with the public, fellow employees and volunteers.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Speak in public and instruct groups diverse in age, culture, and socioeconomic status, in varied settings.
  • Maintain accurate records as required to ensure that accurate and timely information is available.
  • Show maturity and good judgment, perform the job in a professional manner and work efficiently under pressure.
  • Execute projects with little supervision and work independently.
  • Must be highly self-motivated and well organized to manage multiple priorities in a fast paced work environment.
  • Work weekends and evenings.
Knowledge of:
  • Teaching, training, & Behavior Modification techniques.
  • Basic domestic animal care.
  • Computer applications (Word, Excel, Email,).
  • Usage of office equipment (copier, fax machine, telephone, etc.).
  • Digital Video Recording equipment.
Other Essential Qualifications

Must be able to work a flexible schedule as well as the ability to work overtime. Work hours will also include weekend and evening shifts.


Foster Care Program Assistants

Foster Care Program Assistants report to the Foster and Adoption Coordinators and must have excellent customer service skills and be able to work independently. Foster Care Program Assistants are expected to maintain the list of animals available for adoption, take digital photos of the animals in Foster Care, and will write fun, enticing descriptions about each animal for promotional/marketing purposes, to provide as much information possible about the animal’s personality and needs. They may be expected to transport animals to and from the airport, ferry, foster home;socialize and comfort the animals; maintain the database of available foster volunteers; care for neonatal kittens and puppies; and organize paperwork and supplies for kittens and puppies.

This position has equal amounts of desk work, cleaning and animal contact.
