HAPPY PET HAPPY VET

When we decide to bring a dog into our family, we already know that they are going to need care such as grooming and veterinary procedures. This is typically called husbandry work and most people feel like it is just that: work! It doesn’t have to be a chore. Zoo and marine mammal trainers have blazed the trail for us by training animals to cooperate in medical procedures without being sedated or forcibly restrained. In this four-week class, we will work with you and your dog on participating willingly in basic body handling, foot/nail care, and basic vet procedures. We do not guarantee that your dog will not be completely tolerant by the end, but you will have the foundation, skills, and resources at your disposal to continue your training. We will be providing some supplies during class.

  • Next Class TBA
  • $125 for a four-week class (includes class supplies)
  • Run on over to our ProPet login to register! If you do not have a ProPet account with KARE, you can sign up here.

DOG BEHAVIOR DEEP DIVE

Do you work or volunteer with dogs? Do you really want to understand and have the best relationship with your dog? We have the class for you! Our Introduction to Dog Behavior class is a 6-week-long immersion into the world of dogs. You can expect to learn about canine development, how dogs learn, become excellent dog communicators, and demystify behavior and training. There will be multiple opportunities for hands-on learning. Students must complete assigned homework assignments and participate in class discussions. Our class is a revamped version of our 10-week shelter “Canine Behavior Internship” and here’s what people had to say about it:

    • …I loved working with the dogs and watching them improve and seeing us understand each other better was amazing.
    • This type of program helps the shelter by having qualified volunteers. Also, with better volunteers, you get better dogs.
    • The dogs get higher quality enrichment.
    • I am so thankful that I stumbled upon this internship and the KARE crew. They taught me so much about dog behavior and as a result, I have been able to help many dogs get adopted!

  • Next Class TBA
  • $200 for a 6-week class
  • Email [email protected] to signup! CEU credits will be available.

CLICKIN’ CHICKENS

Did you know that you can train a chicken? Did you know that the average chicken is faster than the average dog? Training a chicken will extend and advance your mechanical skills giving you a chance to improve your timing and coordination. This one-day seminar will cover chicken ethology and handling, timing, criteria, rate of reinforcement, and the shaping of simple behavior. By the end of the day, we hope to have all participants and their chickens performing a discrimination task.

9:30 am – 10:30 am PST

How to Register: email [email protected]
Classes are 1 hour long for 8 weeks and are conducted utilizing the Zoom virtual meeting platform.
Classes are limited to:
  • Ages 12 & up*
  • 8 working participants ($245): You will need continual access to a chicken. There will be homework! As soon as you register, you will receive detailed information on how to select and prepare your chicken partner for the course. During the course, instructions will be given for making simple props from things you have around the house. You will have the opportunity to work with Terry one-on-one during class sessions.
  • 12 auditing registrants ($170): You will be involved in class Q&A and people-only exercises that focus on improving your mechanical skills.
Other Important Class Details:
  •  Classes are taught in English. If interpretation is needed, please contact us for a private virtual chicken camp. KARE is not responsible for providing an interpreter. This could affect class time and pricing.
  • Each week all participants receive class notes plus supplemental educational documents
  • Training area for each working participant should be in a quiet area, free of ambient noise and distractions. The area needs a table at least 6 feet in length, a computer with a camera (preferably a laptop), and a chair.
  • All chickens used in training need to be hens, no roosters. Each working participant should have a chicken of their own to work with. During class, the chicken should be kept in a holding area within easy reach of the working table and the computer. Wire dog crates work well for keeping the chickens contained during class while not working with them.
  • CEU credits will be available for both working and auditor participants.
In this virtual course, you’ll get information from Terry’s traditional Chicken Camps, designed to practice animal training. The methods will involve marker-based positive reinforcement techniques. The goal of the course is to help you be a better trainer of any species, including humans. The course will provide practical application for the principles of classical and operant conditioning. Observation and timing skills are practiced. A foundation of target training and discrimination is followed by teaching the chicken to negotiate a simple, chained obstacle course.
*Chickin’ Klickin’ Kids – A very less technical, more hands-on course for children of 7-12 with parental assistance. Dates to be announced.
SPEAKING DOGLISH

A FREE workshop that discusses behavioral and communication differences between dogs and humans.
