Grants

Thanks to our amazing donors during the 2020 Kitsap Great Give, we were able to kickstart our long-awaited grant programs. Both of our grants are dedicated to two KARE team members that left us too soon. Uta Kramer was one of the co-founders of KARE and a lifelong champion of educating our community to keep beloved pets in their homes. Heidi Wakefield was a former Board member of KARE and also a huge supporter. One of Heidi’s goals was to provide medical assistance to those struggling with the decision to help or relinquish their pet due to funds for medical care.

Uta Kramer Memorial Education Grant

Many dogs are surrendered each year to shelters and rescue organizations for behavioral issues. Kitsap Animal Rescue and Education (KARE) was founded in 2000 to provide shelter dogs with a second chance. The founders, Dianne Canafax and Uta Kramer would take dogs out of the shelter that had obvious behavioral challenges, rehabilitate them and then get them adopted to their forever homes. Now 20 years later, we are still providing training assistance for dogs in need of homes through our adoption program!

KARE is also proud to offer an array of behavior and training classes at a low cost. There are, however, many families that are unable to afford any extras, including dog training. For those families, KARE is pleased to introduce the Uta Kramer Memorial Education Grant! This annual grant will award up to $1500.00 worth of training assistance from one of KARE’s certified dog trainers. This may help up to 12 dogs in need of support!

To be eligible for the grant, pet owners must:

  • Be a resident of Kitsap County, WA.*
  • Meet annual income guidelines of $32,950 ($47,050 for a four-person family) or have recently experienced financial hardship.*
  • The dog must be current on Distemper, Bordetella, and Rabies vaccines.

Are you a dog rescue in need of training assistance for one of your adoptable dogs? Do you have a dog that is not getting adopted because of leash reactivity or maybe they don’t walk well on the leash? We are happy to be able to also extend this grant opportunity to local rescues!  Let us help get those pooches adopted and into their forever homes!

To be eligible for the grant, rescue organizations must:

  • Must be a registered 501c-3 rescue organization
  • The dog must be current on Distemper, Bordetella, and Rabies vaccines.
  • Rescue organizations must be located in either Kitsap, Mason, Jefferson, or Pierce counties.
